5 Steps on How to Use Cataclean

In 2020, there are an estimated 287.3 million registered vehicles in the United States alone.

Each of these vehicles is equipped with a catalytic converter to help it meet emissions guidelines. Emissions guidelines vary, but every state has its own (often strict) set of rules and regulations.

To meet these guidelines, a catalytic converter has an important job to do. To do its job most efficiently, these car parts need to be free of carbon buildup. Using a fuel and exhaust system cleaner like Cataclean can help.

But what is the right way on how to use Cataclean? How does it help a catalytic converter do its job? Continue reading to find out everything you need to know on the topic.

What is Cataclean?

Cataclean is a patented fuel and exhaust system cleaner approved by the EPA. It works to reduce carbon buildup inside your vehicle’s catalytic converter.

Cataclean isn’t only beneficial to your catalytic converter. The unique formula also helps clean other vital parts of your fuel and exhaust system. This includes oxygen sensors, fuel injectors, and the cylinder head.

Although the formula is poured into the gas tank of your vehicle, it doesn’t alter the fuel composition. There are special formulas designed for gas, diesel and hybrid engines. This means it can be used in everything from an R56 mini cooper to a Chevrolet Silverado 3500.

According to the manufacturer, Cataclean can lower hydrocarbon emissions by up to half. The formula is also legal in all fifty states, so anyone can use it.

The formula itself is a unique combination of hydrocarbons and known fuel constituents. Some of the components used have been scientifically proven to have a positive effect on the fuel combustion process. Others work before combustion to remove any contaminants that have built-up inside.

What is a Catalytic Converter?

Your vehicle’s catalytic converter is designed to convert harmful pollutants into a gas that is better for the environment. This conversion occurs when the exhaust gases come into contact with the metals inside a catalytic converter.

What Happens When Catalytic Converter Doesn’t Run Properly?

Many things can go wrong with your vehicle when the catalytic converter doesn’t run properly. Just a few of these include:

  • loss of horsepower from excessive carbon buildup
  • loss of fuel economy/fuel is wasted and more is required
  • carbon emissions released are more
  • the vehicle can become louder
  • a rotten egg smell may be released from the exhaust system

Sometimes a vehicle can break down from the side effects of an improperly running catalytic converter. A lot of what does (or doesn’t) happen depends on how long the issue is left without being fixed.

What Causes Problems with Catalytic Converters?

The process of creating less harmful emissions will naturally cause wear and tear on your catalytic converter. The buildup of carbons is part of the natural process that means your vehicle is working properly.

When too much carbon builds up, the catalytic converter is no longer able to run as efficiently. It will end up causing an air to fuel ratio that is less than optimal. This is called “running rich” because not all of the fuel being burned is being used to run your vehicle.

Over time, the catalytic converter can also become worn. This occurs with all vehicle parts and isn’t something Cataclean works for. Using Cataclean as a preventative measure, however, will help extend your catalytic converter’s lifespan.

How to Use Cataclean

Using Cataclean is easy, so anyone can do it. You don’t need mechanical knowledge. Just follow the steps listed below.

Step 1: Remove the seal from the bottle. Dump all the bottle’s contents into your fuel tank. This is the same place where you would put gas.

Step 2: Drive your vehicle for at least 15 minutes to allow the Cataclean to get into your vehicle’s parts.

Step 3: If you have error codes on your on-board computer (OBDII), clear them after you’ve driven the vehicle.

Step 4: Refill your gas tank at the fuel pump. It’s recommended you fill it at least three-quarters full.

Step 5: If there were error codes, drive your vehicle for at least 50 miles to reset the OBDII.

If you follow the steps listed above, your catalytic converter should be cleaned. Remember that sometimes it takes a little longer for the cleaner to work its way through the catalytic converter. By the time you next fill your gas tank, the Cataclean should have worked its way through and be out of your gas tank.

Additional Tips and Information for Use Cataclean

There are a few recommendations that will make your use of Cataclean more efficient. The additional tips and information on how to use Cataclean are listed below.

  • The recommended ratio of use is one 450-milliliter bottle of Cataclean per 15 liters of fuel.
  • After putting the Cataclean in your engine, it helps to accelerate your engine quickly a few times. This will help move the liquid through the fuel and exhaust system and “blow out” extra gunk.
  • You should use Cataclean four times a year, once per season. This will ensure your system stays clean and free of excessive buildup.
